Stop Letting Corporations Dictate Trade Policy

From Citizens Trade Campaign, 3/1/17:  President Trump is right when he says that trade agreements have been a disaster for U.S. workers — but what he keeps getting wrong is why they’ve been so disastrous.  TAKE ACTION: Tell the President and Congress that the best way to stop rigged trade agreements is to end the corporate-dominated process in which they’re created.  The reason that U.S. trade deals are enriching corporate elites at the expense of good-paying jobs, affordable medicine and a healthy environment isn't that they were “poorly negotiated” or that other countries are "taking advantage" of the United States.  The sad truth is that these trade agreements are operating exactly as intended.  That’s because these pacts were written by corporations, for corporations, with only their narrow interests in mind. The corporations behind the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and so many other trade deals want to make it easier to ship jobs around the globe to wherever workers are the most exploited and environmental regulations are the weakest.  They want to use trade policies to handcuff governments’ ability to act in the public interest on food safety, worker rights, health care, climate change, financial stability and so many other important issues.  And they're going to continue getting their way, unless we stop them.

TAKE ACTION: Help ensure the new administration and Congress get the message to "Stop Letting Corporations Dictate U.S. Trade Policy!"

And let me be clear: the President’s constant scapegoating of Mexico and China for the United States’ awful trade deals hides who is really responsible.  It shields the big corporations behind harmful trade policies, as well as the politicians who serve Wall Street over their constituents.  Unless very loud and very forceful public demand pulls trade policymaking out of the shadows, the corporations behind NAFTA and the TPP will use new trade negotiations to further pad their bank accounts at the expense of working families globally.  If they get their way, NAFTA and other deals will become even worse. Sitting on our hands is not an option.  Trump promised to “drain the swamp,” but right now, he seems poised to allow the same corporate leaches that created NAFTA and subsequent pacts to rewrite the new ones. His administration is now full of multimillionaires and billionaires who supported NAFTA, who supported the TPP and who have enriched themselves off the very trade deals that have hurt so many working people in the U.S. and around the world.

If we’re going to hold Trump accountable to his promises to create trade deals that create jobs, trade negotiations need to be dragged into the light of day.  Please join us in demanding an end to closed-door, corporate-dominated trade negotiations now.

The public is clearly ready for trade policies that put human needs over corporate greed.  It's up to us to make sure that happens.
