Lunds & Byerly's Negotiations

2016 Contract Negotiations

Your Union Contract is a legal document that contains provisions related to workers' rights and benefits. Your contract is the result of bargaining between the Union and the Employer beginning with the Union's initial proposal and followed by negotiations on items that affect your job. UFCW Local 1189 is committed to keeping you involved and informed.  Regular updates will be available online and by email. (If you would like to receive email updates please contact the office to ensure we have your current email address). When a tentative agreement is reached (or when we receive the Employer's final offer) the Union will schedule a time for you to vote on the proposed changes to your contract. After a majority of voting employees approve their contract language it then goes into effect. If you have questions on the process, please contact your Union Representative.

Congratulations to the members covered by the St. Paul area Gocery Contracts on the ratification of their new Agreement!  Easy access to voting allowed for high membership participation as members were able to vote in their breakrooms, the Maplewood Community Center or at the Union Hall. The 3-year contract passed with 81% of members voting "Yes to accept the proposed settlement offer." Members from Cub Foods, Rainbow, Jerry's, Kowalski's, Lunds & Byerlys, Festival and Knowlan's Meat depts. participated in the ratification vote.

Local 1189 and its negotiating committee members reached a tenative agreement with the St. Paul retail employers (County Market, Cub Foods, Rainbow, Jerry's Foods, Festival Foods, Knowlan's Meat Department, Kowalski's and Lunds & Byerlys) late in the evening on Friday, July 15, 2016.

From St. Paul Pioneer Press, 7/16/16:  The union representing some 4,000 grocery workers in the east metro has reached a tentative agreement with its members’ employers and will vote on the proposal Aug. 4.  Bernie Hesse, director of special projects for United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1189 said his organization represents clerks, bakery workers, meat cutters and other employees of grocery stores like Cub, Lunds & Byerlys, Rainbow and Festival Foods.

St. Paul Employers reach agreement with Union Bargaining committee, The employers' offer comes with unanimous committee recommendation to accept.  The employers' proposal ensures that the members’ health and welfare plan remains well funded.

Voting is scheduled for Thursday August 4th  with voting will take place at each store and all day voting at the Union Hall and Maplewood Community Center.

On Thursday June 16, 2016 UFCW Local 1189 members voted on the most recent contract proposal from the St. Paul area retail grocers. Workers at Cub Foods, Rainbow, Jerry’s Foods, Lunds and Byerlys, Kowalski’s Markets, Festival Foods, Knowlan’s (Meat Dept.) and County Market voted overwhelmingly to reject the deal with over 96% of members saying NO to the deal. The Companies, in what UFCW Local 1189 referred to as a power move, proposed a final offer forcing the workers to vote on the Employers’ insufficient and poorly crafted deal rather than continue bargaining.
