Meet Your New UFCW 1189 Officers
Congratulations to the new UFCW Local 1189 President, Jim Gleb and new Secretary Treasurer, Abe Wangnoo. Both were sworn into their new positions on August 18, 2021, at the UFCW Local 1189 General Membership Meeting.
Jim Gleb has been a member of the UFCW for 48 years. He started with Local 789 as a carry-out, stocker and checker with Country Club Markets in St. Paul in 1973. He then went to Seattle, Washington where he worked in the produce department and worked his way up to a Produce Department Manager. In 1988, Jim joined the staff of UFCW Local 1105 as a Union Representative, Assistant Grievance Director, Grievance Director and Secretary Treasurer. While in Washington State, Local 1105 and Local 1001 merged to create Local 21, which is now the largest UFCW Local in the country. Jim held the position of Retail Director at Local 21. In 2008, Jim returned to Minnesota at Local 1116 in Duluth where he was an Organizer and Union Representative. Local 1116 merged with Local 789 and Local 1189 was born. After the merger, Jim moved to the St. Paul office where he most recently held the position of Secretary Treasurer. As President, Jim’s goal is to continue to improve contracts and livelihoods for members and to grow the Local’s membership.
New UFCW Local 1189 Secretary Treasurer Abe Wangnoo has been a UFCW member for over 15 years. He first became a member at the age of 15, working for Cub Foods as a clean-team member and then as a produce clerk and cashier. Growing up in a Union family, Abe wanted to work for the UFCW since grade school. He got that opportunity in 2008 when he began working as an organizer for The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union. In 2011 Abe became the Organizer at UFCW Local 1000 in Texas and in 2014 he returned to Minnesota after accepting the position of Organizing Director for Local 1189. From 2008 through 2018 Abe assisted thousands of workers with organizing into the UFCW. In 2018 he switched his focus from external organizing toward helping current members when he became a Union Representative and the Northern Director at Local 1189. As Secretary Treasurer, Abe hopes to continue helping the local grow through internal and external organizing and to strengthen and improve the lives of the Local’s membership through strong contracts and great representation.
Tami Denn-Bauer was re-elected to her position as Recording Secretary. Prior to joining the UFCW 1189 staff, Tami worked for Machinists District Lodge 143 for nearly 25 years before the office was closed due to the Northwest Airlines/Delta merger. Tami was hired in 2011 as the office manager of UFCW 1189, promoted to Union Representative in 2016, and originally appointed to the Recording Secretary position in 2020.
