UNFI/Cub Foods Reaches Out to School Districts Regarding Childcare for Grocery Workers

Grocery workers are Essential Tier 2 Workers

"Beyond the emergency workers listed in the Governor’s Executive Order, there are other critical workers that are absolutely necessary for districts to consider. Care for children of educators, gas and electric utility workers, food distribution personnel, water treatment staff, and others outlined below is essential to ensuring the public continues to receive these vital services. Districts should make every effort to provide care for school-age children of workers in the areas below, if they are able to do so while adhering to the Minnesota Department of Health’s social distancing guidelines. UNFI has taken action to assist their workers in accessing Child Care assistance. While the information below has been provided by UNFI/Cub Foods, all Grocery workers are eligible to request this assistance if the schools are able to follow the guidelines.

UNFI sent the following letter to School Superintendents: along with a letter for workers to bring to their area schools: PDF icon Cub School District Associate Letter 20200318 1723.pdf

Dear Superintendent:

We are writing on behalf of UNFI, which acquired SUPERVALU in October 2018 and is now the parent company of CUB, both of which are large long-standing Minnesota employers of approximately 6,000 Minnesota-based associates.  We operate approximately 80 CUB stores in Minnesota, as well as food warehouses in Hopkins, MN, Fargo, ND, and Prescott, WI that supply not only CUB, but also most major independent grocers in Minnesota.  We are extremely proud of the great work our associates are displaying in response to the COVID-19 national emergency.

Recently Governor Walz issued Executive Order 20-02 which provides, in part, for school districts such as yours to provide free school age care for the children of emergency workers.  Under recent guidelines issued by the Minnesota Department of Education, our food distribution workers who support our CUB stores and our warehouses are classified as Essential Tier 2 Workers.  The Department guidelines instructs school districts to provide care for school-age children of our associates if they are able.

We sincerely request the following:

  • your school district provides these important services for our associates who are working so hard to provide our communities with food products in this time of emergency; and
  • you provide us with information on what your school district is doing to provide these services, including any communications you are producing and the names of contact people so we can coordinate our efforts on behalf of our essential associates.

Finally, attached are letters that we will be asking our employees to provide your school district for the state-sponsored school district supported day care.

We greatly appreciate all the work you and your team are doing during this time of emergency.

Sincerely,

Diana Colburn
