Why does our Union get involved in politics?
Members often ask- why are we involved in politics? Because we need to be engaged on the local, county, state, and federal level. Most of the work is centered on the state house and state senate. Our day-to-day lives are impacted by what they decide, fund, and guide with public policy. We have helped shape new legislation in the last few years that have improved our members' lives. For example, a broad coalition of groups worked together to increase funding for nursing homes. The effect was an increase in wages and benefits for our members. For example, we helped pass medical cannabis legislation which changed and improved the quality of life for many children in Minnesota. We also organized the workers in one of the facilities. For example, we passed Earned Sick and Safe Time in Saint Paul and now our members will have time off when they are sick or a child needs care."Politics is the science of who gets what, when, and why." -Sidney HillmanFor more information contact: Bernie Hesse at 651-216-3827
