Members are feeling relieved as Retail Meat and Grocery Employers agree to allow for workers to wear masks and are providing gloves at all of our Union Grocery stores. Initial concerns that the community would think our members were working sick, have been replaced by the willingness to do what is necessary to protect the workers. As plexiglass barriers find their way into the check stands, UFCW Local 1189 has been working with our employers to update policies and protect our members. Union Members in virtually all of of the industries we represent have been deemed essential.

Governor Walz has listened to the concerns of our Union and has issued an executive order protecting grocery workers on the joband classifying us the same as other frontline workers – health care, police, fire, etc. This gives us access to the same benefits under this emergency as these other frontline workers. We want to thank our Governor for standing with US during this crisis. Click
Union Grocery employers are continuing to step up to the plate. Employers are acknowleging the hard work and dedication of store employees as they work to keep the food supply chain functioning. Working closely with the public presents challenges in the best of times, but even more so today in the ever evolving COVID 19 environment. We all can't say it enough, Thank you workers, and thank you employers for the tangible acknowedgement. Here are the lastest retail grocery bonuses: (Please support the grocers who support and recognize their workers).
Grocery workers are Essential Tier 2 Workers
"Beyond the emergency workers listed in the Governor’s Executive Order, there are other critical workers that are absolutely necessary for districts to consider. Care for children of educators, gas and electric utility workers, food distribution personnel, water treatment staff, and others outlined below is essential to ensuring the public continues to receive these vital services. Districts should make every effort to provide care for school-age children of workers in the areas below, if they are able to do so while adhering to the Minnesota Department of Health’s social distancing guidelines."
Union Grocery Retailers in the Twin Cities Metro area and Duluth have been on the front lines of the COVID-19 outbreak. Cashiers, meat cutters, stockers, utility and courtesy employees, pharmacy techs, clerks, and more are tirelessly working to make sure that people in their communities have the food (and paper products) they need. With each and every news broadcast creating a new wave of concern among shoppers, our members in the stores find few moments to pause and take a breath during their day.

I began my membership in the Union as a part timer in the deli at the Cottage Grove Cub store, was moved to full time meat as helper in the seafood department at the Eagan store, where I was selected to be on the 1995 negotiating committee (for Local 653). In the fall of 1995 when the Midway Cub store opened, I was promoted to apprentice and became a journeyman meat cutter in 1997. I worked at the Maplewood West location and then was transferred back to where I began – Cottage Grove. As a member, I served on the Executive Board for the Local. In 1998 I was hired on staff where I have worked as an Organizer, Communications Director (Web and Newsletter), and Union Representative. I served as Secretary Treasurer from 2003 - June 2016.On June 29, 2016 the Executive Board of our Union elected me to serve out the remainder of retired President Sequist's term, I thank them for their affirmation of my ability to lead our great Local. I honor and am humbled by the women who blazed the trails before me and beside me – and for the men who open doors and showed that there are no glass ceilings in this Union. In the word of George Meany – the first president of the AFL- CIO “Labor never quits. We never give up the fight no matter how tough the odds, no matter how long it takes.”Brothers and Sisters, we are stronger together and together we will win. Thank you again for allowing me to serve as your President.
