Just after 7:30PM, our Super Valu bargaining committee reached a tentative agreement with their employer. This agreement covers the Corporate Cub stores and SV owned Rainbow banner stores. This agreement is the same as the rest of the industry which reached agreement earlier this week. Voting for Corporate Cub Stores will take place on Thursday October 9. The Employer's offer comes with full committee recommendation to VOTE YES! Voting will be held all day at the Union hall and an hour in each store breakroom (schedule to be posted).

Union contract negotiations with St. Mark's are scheduled to begin on September 16, 2014. These meetings will be held at the facility. Members are encouraged to submit proposals for changes they would like to see in their contract and their workplace to Jennifer Christensen. Please submit your proposals prior to September 16. After considerable time, and a mediated discussion with President Seaquist and Secretary-Treasurer Christensen, the Employer group realized they would not be able to present a formal counter proposal to the Union. They requested a cancellation of the bargaining session on Tuesday, August 5 in order to develop a formal proposal that, according to the Employer group, may break the stalemate between the Union 20-hour threshold for Union health fund coverage and the Employer proposal of 30 hours.
The Retail Supermarket Industry Bargaining committees met Thursday, July 24 at Local 1189’s Union Hall in an effort to break the stalemate over competing proposals regarding our health insurance plan. The Union withdrew all its previous health insurance proposals and presented the Employer group with a new proposal that covered both health insurance and significant wage increases for all classifications. President Seaquist presented the proposal and explained our rationale for keeping it simple.
Informational meetings will be held for all Rainbow Foods members to discuss the impact of the sale that was announced by Roundy’s Inc., on May 7, 2014. Meetings will be held on Monday, May 12, 2014 at the UFCW Local 1189 Union Hall: 266 Hardman Ave N, South St. Paul, MN at the following times: 9:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m. Members are encouraged to attend and to car-pool with coworkers.

I began my membership in the Union as a part timer in the deli at the Cottage Grove Cub store, was moved to full time meat as helper in the seafood department at the Eagan store, where I was selected to be on the 1995 negotiating committee (for Local 653). In the fall of 1995 when the Midway Cub store opened, I was promoted to apprentice and became a journeyman meat cutter in 1997. I worked at the Maplewood West location and then was transferred back to where I began – Cottage Grove. As a member, I served on the Executive Board for the Local. In 1998 I was hired on staff where I have worked as an Organizer, Communications Director (Web and Newsletter), and Union Representative. I served as Secretary Treasurer from 2003 - June 2016.On June 29, 2016 the Executive Board of our Union elected me to serve out the remainder of retired President Sequist's term, I thank them for their affirmation of my ability to lead our great Local. I honor and am humbled by the women who blazed the trails before me and beside me – and for the men who open doors and showed that there are no glass ceilings in this Union.
