09/10/2014 On Tuesday, September 9 our major retail bargaining committee met with employer representatives from corporate Cub, Kowalski's, Jerry's, Lunds/Byerly's and Festival. During the day we once again reviewed potential changes to our health fund. This has been a very long and difficult process for our committee as we review fund costs and revenue along with the potential for additional revenue that will be needed. Our committee approved a union proposal that included new fund revenue from both the employer and eligible plan participants.

09/10/2014 Jerry's Enterprises, Inc. notified the Union by fax this morning that it will be closing its Rainbow Foods store located at 1660 S. Robert Street in West St. Paul. The Company anticipates that members will be separted from employment on November 9, 2014 or during a 14-day period that begins on that date. Members who are affected by the closure are encouraged to attend the Dislocated Workers Meeting tomorrow - September 11, 2014 10:00 am or 1:00 pm at the Union Hall to receive information and assistance in their job searches.

Valley View Nursing home negotiations began on a tense note.
The proposal presented by the Union was based on the results of survey sent to the membership and reflected the need to increase compensation and incentives in order to keep up with the cost of living and staff the building.

Our retail bargaining committee spent a full day on Wednesday, September 3 in a bargaining session with all of our major retail employers.  The day was spent entirely on health care and how to maintain coverage for the vast majority of our members.  We reached a “conceptual agreement” on how to determine members' eligibility for our current health plan.  This agreement has many details to work out, but the day resulted in significant progress toward reaching an agreement.

On August 26, 2014 the negotiating committee met with the Employer.  Proposals from both the Union and Employer were discussed along with employee concerns and safety issues.  Negotiations have been scheduled for September 16, 2014.  Your negotiating commtitee members are Alex Campbell-Witt, Cheryl Olsen, Linda Tainter, Lisa Waadevig and Union Representative Mike Dreyer.

Additional sessions will be held on September 11 at 10:00 am and 1:00 pm. The first meetings for dislocated Rainbow Foods employees (held on Thursday, August 21) had low attendance due to short notice. Former Rainbow employees on The Planning and Selection Committee wanted to get the process going as soon as possible and while some folks received the notices late, many members were able to get started in planning for their new careers. With that in mind, we have scheduled another day of orientation meetings that will give much more advanced notice to Rainbow Foods dislocated workers.

All across the country, corporations and the ultra-wealthy are funneling unprecedented amounts of money into our political system.  Their goal is to create an unbalanced and unfair economy where wages are as low as possible and profits replace respect for the workers that created them.  Active Ballot Club (ABC) seeks to level the playing field. By bringing together thousands of workers, our political concerns can be amplified to a decibel that is impossible to ignore.  ABC turns pocket change into big change for working families by fighting for:

On August 14-15, 2014, the negotiating committee met with the Employer.  Tentative agreements were reached on some of the Union's proposals as well as the Employer's.  Negotiations have been scheduled for September 18-19, 2014.  Still open are all the economic proposals.  Union Negotiating Committee members are Rick Cornwell and Timothy Bruels with Union Representative Mike Dreyer.  You can view the Employer's and Union's proposals here:

We have all seen the commercials, the ones where Walmart compares itself to our local Union Grocery stores. The ads seem to imply that Walmart is saving us all so much money - but like so much we see today, the truth is really missing. UFCW1189's parady of the ad shows the true cost - not the false savings. Watch. Share. and Shop at Union Stores.
